LL Viewer 3.2.x Many UI Improvements, Moving Forward.

Posted by Unknown on 12:06 PM

When Linden Lab released their Viewer 2.0 last year it was not well received by the majority of SL users. I personally did not mind it, while yes it lacked the features and ease of use of the Phoenix Viewer, I found it slick, innovative and fun to use. I will admit though that I rarely use LL official viewers as I find them to always be unstable and always very buggy. I have preferred the likes of Firestorm, Dolphin, and the now on hiatus Kirsten's Viewer.

If you are a viewer freak like me and follow everything viewer related (yes I have 6 different viewers installed), you are aware of LL's development viewer which you can download from here.

I am pleased to see LL finally listening to what the users want and are finally working to improve the viewer UI. Here is a short walk through of what you will find.

After downloading and installing the fun will begin.

The first thing you will notice is that there no longer is an option to log in on a dumbed down "basic" mode. This is good because I always found it to be idiotic and it confused the noobs more than it helped them.

Here is where the major changes have taken place. Immediately you will notice that the sidebar is gone and has been replaced by toolbars. The toolbars are on the bottom, and left and right sides. The toolbars are configurable and I will show you how. The next thing you will notice is that the favorites toolbar has been moved and merged with with the navigation bar and thus taking less space than it used to. Another chance is the position of the chat window pop ups that have now been moved to the top right of the screen. This layout makes a lot more sense to me and seems to unclutter the screen.

When you click and drag one of the toolbar buttons you will see the toolbars highlighted in blue, this is where you can drop your buttons.

Con: Although you can drag and place each button in the position you want them the size and position of the toolbar is not configurable. I guess I am too used to Linux and like my panels which are completely configurable, I would like to have full control of these toolbars as well. Like I would like to be able to change the size, and location of them, but I guess this is a start. However the buttons are themselves configurable. You can choose which buttons to display and also whether you want a label on them or just the icon.

Choose buttons will open the following window:

Simply drag buttons to and from this window onto your toolbar. Then you may also decide to display icons only.

This is how my setup looks.

The bad, The ugly, The Uggh Why Can't They Fix This:

The People window is still huge. I would like to be able to change the width and length of it not just the length. I also do not need the idiotic recent tab, it is only taking up space. On the nearby tab I would love to see what Firestorm and Kirsten's has and that is the range in meters of the people on the list. If i cannot tell how far the nearby people are from me then this window is of no use at all to me.

I should also mention that on the inventory window there is a new item called Received Items. I am assuming this will be for the new direct delivery think they are trying out. I hope this is properly implemented when it finally makes its way to the grid.

So if you have been waiting for a better viewer from the Lab, I recommend that you give this one a try, you might like it.

Google+, Circle me!

Posted by Unknown on 8:00 PM

So today I went to do a search and when I went to google I was met with the new Google+ which is now open to the public although it is still in beta it no longer is closed beta. Google+ is google's new and exciting social networking site. It is a little bit like Facebook but offers a little more features and I found it a little more simple to use. So here is a little introduction in case you have not checked it out yet.

Upon log in you will land on the home page. This is similar to Facbook's page where you can post messages and share links, photos and video. Your friends can comment on your posts as well. As you can see I only have one friend, I am a loner! so add me if you want :D

The next page is the Photos page. Here you can upload pictures you want to share with your circles or the whole world if you wish. Note that you have the option of who you want to be able to view them.

Then is the Profile page, this is what your friends and people on the web see. They can comment on your posts, look at your photos, and videos.

Then you come to the Circles page. Here is where you can add friends to different categories that are preset or you can make your own. It is easy to add a person to a category, all you do is drag and drop.

Lastly is the games page, yes it seems Google+ will also have games for you to waste your time and money on.

Posting to your stream page is easy, just type, add a photo, a link or a video and then select who you want to be able to see your post and click share.

OK that is all for now. If I think of anything more I will update this post. Oh and by the way, fair warning to all you SLers, like Facebook, Google+ requires that accounts belong to a "real" identity and will suspend your profile if your account is an avatar account. Please make sure you read the TOS and don't blame me if something goes wrong.

Willowdale Elementary School

Posted by Unknown on 7:03 PM

First place I am honored to write about is Willowdale Elementary, yes I go here so this blog might be just a little bit biased. First of all I must say that I have never been into the whole SL school rp thing, mostly because I don't enjoy serious rp and totally loathe people who take their rp too damn serious. I like just being me, and I will not under any circumstances stop being myself.

I have in the past under other avis attended HK winter and summer camps and for a short time another school and I must say the experiences for me only made me loathe the whole idea about school even more. I mean c'mon can somebody explain to me why child avis freak out if you cuss? I mean did you not cuss when you were in rl elementary school? But anyhow that is not what this blog post is about.

I found my home in Willowdale Elementary because here I can be myself. Some people still piss their pants over such little things as cussing but at least not as much.

The curriculum at WES is much different than any other school in sl. We have so many fun classes, for example Harry Potter class headed by Ms. Lisa and it sure beats having to sit in a boring class like math or science. There is also a building class with Dr. Kool who teaches us to make really cool things and even goes into scripting a little bit. For those who love dance, we have dance, ballet, cheer leading and even gymnastics. Whatever you are into, you are sure to find a class that will interest you, and here is the good part, unlike other schools you are not stuck with only one class two times a week. Here are WES you can attend any of the classes any day of the week, it is up to you which class you want to attend to.

At a mere 200L per month for tuition WES sure gives you a lot for your money and after careful searching I have not come across another school in SL that offers you so much for so little.

It is not the price of attending here that makes me love this place though, it is the real sense of community and family that we have here. Everyone at WES gets along and we all take care of each other and for me that is priceless. If you have ever wanted to try going to school in SL but have been too shy to attend any of the other schools where people seem to be...well you know not so friendly, then give WES a try, you will really feel at home from the start.

Feel free to leave your thoughts on WES if I left anything out, or heck even leave your thoughts on me if you want I don't care I can assure you I will not be offended.

ETA: I will update this post as needed.
